Before you bid
Habits that keep naval collectors out of trouble.
Ask about provenance
Fully rigged ship models and instruments are often one-offs. Ask for maker marks, serial numbers and any history, and for photos of rigging, glass and seals.
Check the size and shipping
Large models and brass instruments are fragile and heavy. Confirm dimensions, scale and packing before you place a bid, and factor insured shipping into your ceiling.
Snipe, don't squabble
Decide your maximum in advance, bid in the final minutes, and let the clock do the work. Sorting by "ending soonest" makes it easy to catch auctions as they close.
